After the massive success of the documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor, it seems everyone has become infatuated with the life and legacy of Fred Rogers, or as he is more lovingly know, Mister Rogers. With the upcoming release of the biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood starring Tom Hanks, we thought this was the perfect time to reflect on Christmastime with Mister Rogers.
Christmastime with Mister Rogers was a one hour primetime special that was released in 1977 during the four year hiatus of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on PBS.
In this Christmas special all of our favourite characters like Mr McFeely, Henrietta Pussycat, Office Clemmons, and Daniel the Striped Tiger are in the Christmas spirit and finding ways to show their appreciation and love for their friends during the holiday season.
Even the Neighborhood of Make-Believe deck their halls in time for Christmas! But gifts are not allowed to be opened in Make-Believe until King Friday gives his word. In this case, that word is “Slopperydozafanoondapuck” (which means “what a difference one person can make”)!
During this special there are carolers, gift exchanges, and wonderful examples of neighbours helping each other out during the hustle and bustle of Christmas.

Christmastime with Mister Rogers also includes a segment where Mister Rogers explains to viewers that different families have different traditions. He explains Christmas, Hanukkah, and that some people do not celebrate at all. He explains that when someone gives you a gift, it is a sign of love.
It is not easy to find this Christmas special, but we believe it worth the effort. It is a sweet and thoughtful holiday special for the whole family to enjoy.
